A fresh political warning has emerged ahead of the 2027 elections, with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed declaring that the opposition faces an uphill battle after the ruling Allied Peoples Movement swept the state’s latest local government election.

Mohammed spoke on Tuesday while inaugurating the newly elected 20 local government chairmen at the Government House in Bauchi.

According to the governor, the outcome of the election was more than a local victory, describing it as a clear indication of the level of acceptance enjoyed by his administration among the people.

He pointed to the performance of the APM, a relatively new and smaller political platform than the PDP, saying its victory had demonstrated that the party had become a formidable political force in the state.

Mohammed said the result should worry opposition parties as the 2027 general elections approach.

He declared that the latest poll was a “warning signal” and a difficult challenge for opposition parties, insisting that they would struggle to make any meaningful impact in the 2027 elections.

“The recent election has shown that the APM, a relatively new and smaller political platform than the PDP, is nevertheless a formidable political platform,” Mohammed said.

“Indeed, this local government election is a warning signal and a daunting task to the opposition parties. They do not stand a chance of making any impact during the 2027 elections,” he added.

The governor attributed the ruling party’s performance to the achievements recorded by his administration across key sectors, including infrastructure, security, healthcare, education and agriculture.

He listed road construction and rehabilitation, improved healthcare facilities, school construction and renovation, as well as agricultural interventions among the projects undertaken by his government.

Mohammed, however, cautioned the newly elected council chairmen not to allow their electoral victory to become an excuse for complacency or misuse of public funds.

He told them that local government administration must move away from the practice of treating public funds as money meant to be shared, stressing that their responsibility was to confront challenges and meet the needs of residents.

The governor warned the chairmen against misappropriating or diverting local government funds, particularly with financial autonomy now giving councils greater responsibility for managing their affairs.

He further instructed them to maintain close cooperation with traditional institutions, security agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen peace and security across their councils.

Mohammed also urged the chairmen to promptly relay information on emerging security threats to the relevant authorities.

The governor charged his newly appointed special advisers to demonstrate their value immediately, saying their tenure would be judged by the impact they make on the people.

The APM’s latest victory marked the third local government election conducted under Mohammed’s administration since 2019. The party secured all 20 chairmanship positions and 319 councillorship seats in the latest exercise.
