The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, David Mark, has raised the alarm over possible manipulation of the 2027 elections, warning that state institutions must not be deployed to influence the outcome of the polls.

Mark made the declaration in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the International Republican Institute, which is currently assessing Nigeria’s preparations for the next general elections.

The former Senate President said the ADC would expect the 2027 electoral process to be transparent, inclusive and peaceful, insisting that Nigerians must be able to vote without intimidation or interference.

He described the credibility of the elections as a matter that could not be compromised, arguing that public confidence in the democratic process would depend heavily on the integrity of the polls.

Mark also raised concerns about what he called the recurring misuse of the electoral process by governments and non-state actors, warning that electoral malpractice could damage democratic governance and deepen public distrust.

Turning to the recently concluded Osun State governorship election, the ADC chairman said reports of violence and intimidation should serve as a serious warning ahead of 2027.He claimed that reports indicated that at least 30 people lost their lives during the Osun election, describing the reported deaths as reprehensible and condemnable.

According to Mark, political competition must not become a “do-or-die” affair, as elections are designed to provide citizens with a peaceful avenue to select leaders and pursue their aspirations.

He said the ADC wanted voters to participate in an electoral process conducted in a secure environment, where citizens could cast their ballots without fear of violence or intimidation.Mark further insisted that votes must be counted and respected, while mandates freely given by Nigerians must not be undermined.

“For us in the ADC, the credibility of the 2027 elections must be non-negotiable,” he declared, calling for elections that would be free from manipulation, intimidation and abuse of state institutions.

The warning comes as political parties begin intensifying their strategies for the 2027 elections amid growing debate over electoral reforms, political violence and the neutrality of government institutions.

The IRI delegation said its mission was focused on assessing Nigeria’s preparedness and engaging stakeholders on issues that could affect the credibility and conduct of the 2027 polls.

The organisation’s African Regional Director, Jenai Cox, said the group was conducting a pre-election assessment mission as part of its engagement ahead of the elections
