Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has challenged opposition parties preparing for the 2027 elections to present credible alternative policies rather than seeking a change of government without demonstrating how their programmes would differ from those of the All Progressives Congress.
Sanwo-Olu spoke on Tuesday during the centenary anniversary lecture of the Yoruba Tennis Club in Onikan, Lagos, where he defended the APC’s record in Lagos and at the federal level.
The governor said voters should not be asked to embrace change simply because it is change, insisting that opposition parties should explain why their alternatives would provide a better direction.
He said the APC would campaign on continuity and what he described as the party’s record of transformation in Lagos, while extending the argument to the national level.
“Our challenge to the opposition remains the same – to put forward credible ideas that can compete with ours, instead of seeking change for the sake of change,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu, who serves as the South-West Zonal Coordinator of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, also linked the argument to President Bola Tinubu’s expected bid to retain the Presidency in 2027.
He said Lagos’ development since 1999 demonstrated the importance of continuity, noting that successive administrations had continued with a development blueprint initiated under Tinubu when he was governor of the state.
The governor cited the Blue and Red rail lines among projects he said reflected the continuation of the state’s long-term development plan.
He also identified vision, self-reliance and partnership as key elements of what he described as the “Lagos Playbook,” while pointing to the state’s internally generated revenue as an important part of its development strategy.
Sanwo-Olu further defended his administration’s record under the THEMES+ agenda, highlighting investments in transportation, education, health, technology, agriculture and infrastructure.
Among the projects he listed were two public universities, the Imota Rice Mill, submarine cable and data-centre investments, a children’s hospital and the Lagos Central Food Security System and Logistics Hub.
The governor said the ultimate measure of governance should be its impact on ordinary people, including whether workers can commute efficiently, children have the necessary school materials and traders can move their goods to market before they spoil.
His remarks come as political parties and aspirants intensify their preparations for the 2027 elections.
