The 2027 presidential race has entered a fresh phase after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu unveiled the APC’s campaign council, appointing former Zamfara Governor Abdulaziz Yari as Director-General to lead the ruling party’s re-election campaign.
The campaign structure was announced on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, as the APC begins to mobilise its political machinery ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tinubu will serve as Chairman of the campaign council, while Vice President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda will serve as Vice Chairmen.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has been named Secretary, while APC National Secretary Ajibola Bashiru and Hadiza Bala-Usman will serve as Deputy Secretary and Assistant Secretary respectively.
Yari, who previously served as Zamfara State Governor, will take charge of coordinating the campaign as Director-General, placing him at the centre of the APC’s effort to secure Tinubu another term.
The campaign structure also includes several influential figures from the party and government, reflecting the APC’s attempt to deploy experienced political leaders across different areas of the election effort.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni have been appointed Deputy Directors-General, while Opeyemi Bamidele and Jibril Barau will assist with coordination across the country’s major political zones.
Former Edo Governor Adams Oshiomhole has been assigned responsibility for mobilisation, while James Faleke returns to a senior campaign position as Deputy Director-General for election planning, coordination and monitoring.
The APC has also named officials to oversee campaign activities across the six geopolitical zones, with separate structures for legal affairs, election planning, media and strategic communication.
Minister of Information Mohammed Idris Malagi will coordinate media and strategic communication, working with prominent figures including Dele Alake, Bayo Onanuga and Lanre Issa-Onilu.
The media team will also include several coordinating deputy directors and secretaries, while Segun Dada returns as Director of New Media.
Dele Alake has been named the lead spokesperson, alongside Alwan Hassan, Ayobami Oyalowo, Kemi Asekun-Shittu and Adamu Fanda.
President Tinubu has directed members of the campaign council to work tirelessly towards retaining the presidency for the APC, while urging them to communicate the administration’s achievements to voters.
The President maintained that his government had fulfilled its campaign promises and placed Nigeria on a path towards economic progress.
He urged the campaign team to highlight what he described as the administration’s achievements and use them to build confidence and support ahead of the election.
Tinubu also called on the APC campaign team to defeat opposition forces seeking to replace the ruling party, setting the stage for an increasingly intense battle ahead of 2027.
The development comes as opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi intensify their own political activities ahead of the presidential contest.
Meanwhile, ADC chieftain Dele Momodu has said his opposition to Tinubu is not rooted in personal animosity, arguing that he would support the President if he believed the administration was protecting the democratic principles they once fought for.
Momodu said he continues to respect Tinubu and credited him with playing a role in shaping his political outlook, particularly his willingness to challenge established political structures.
He also acknowledged Tinubu’s political achievements in Lagos, saying they helped elevate the President from a regional political figure to a major national political force.
