The abducted Principal of Community High School, Esiele, Mrs Rachael Folawe Alamu, has made a public appeal from captivity, urging Nigerians and government authorities to secure the release of her and other victims, insisting her abductors are not demanding N1 billion, weapons or the introduction of Sharia law.

In a video that surfaced online on Monday, Alamu said she decided to speak after learning that reports circulating in parts of the media had misrepresented the demands of those holding them captive.

The principal and several pupils and teachers were abducted on May 15 when armed attackers invaded schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. One of the teachers was reportedly killed while in captivity.

Speaking in the video, Alamu denied reports claiming the kidnappers were demanding N1 billion, weapons or the enforcement of Sharia law across Nigeria.

According to her, the captors have repeatedly maintained that their primary demand is the release of some individuals currently in custody. She said reports suggesting otherwise only complicate efforts to secure the victims’ freedom.

Alamu pleaded with Nigerians not to allow politics to interfere with negotiations, warning that misinformation could endanger the lives of those being held.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress threatened nationwide action over worsening insecurity, warning that workers may be advised to stay home if authorities fail to tackle escalating attacks, kidnappings and killings across the country.
