FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike has reassured the diplomatic community that Abuja offers a secure and enabling environment for their work. Speaking at the Saint Patrick’s Day reception and the opening of Ireland’s new embassy, he highlighted improvements in security and infrastructure under President Bola Tinubu.
Wike stressed that transforming Abuja into a competitive and globally recognised capital is a top priority of his administration. He noted that foreign missions are critical stakeholders, and the government is committed to ensuring they operate without obstacles.
Clarifying his role, Wike said he was speaking in his capacity as the FCT Minister, not on behalf of the federal government or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He described himself as the “landlord” of the diplomatic community, responsible for maintaining order and security.
He urged embassies to develop their allocated plots promptly, warning that failure to do so could result in encroachment issues. Wike said the law will take its course against land grabbers and pledged to protect diplomatic properties from illegal claims.
The minister congratulated Ireland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Peter Ryan, and commended the embassy on its new premises. He stressed that collaboration between the FCT Administration and the diplomatic corps is crucial for sustainable development and operational efficiency.
Wike hinted at a forthcoming visit to Ireland after receiving an invitation from the ambassador. He noted that the appointment of a trusted and capable envoy makes the timing appropriate and expressed optimism for strengthened bilateral ties.
He concluded by pledging continued improvements in security and infrastructure across Abuja. Wike assured the diplomatic community that the FCT Administration remains committed to providing a conducive environment for foreign missions to thrive and perform their duties effectively.
