Former Senator Dino Melaye has praised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar following his victory in the African Democratic Congress presidential primary, comparing the feat to Arsenal’s recent Premier League title success.
Melaye shared the message on his X account after Atiku emerged winner of the keenly watched primary election held by the ADC.
The former Kogi West lawmaker expressed admiration for Atiku’s performance, saying the victory reminded him of Arsenal’s achievement after ending a lengthy wait for the league title.
His congratulatory message was brief but symbolic, stating, “Boss, you did it just like Arsenal.”
Atiku secured the ADC presidential ticket after polling 1,846,370 votes in the primary election conducted by the party.
Former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi finished second with 504,117 votes, while economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen polled 177,120 votes.
Tunde Ogbeha, who oversaw the election, officially announced the results and declared Atiku winner of the contest.
The victory positions Atiku as the ADC candidate for the 2027 presidential election as he prepares for another attempt at the nation’s highest office.
The former Vice President has contested several presidential elections and remains a major figure within Nigeria’s opposition politics.
Observers say his emergence could intensify political competition ahead of 2027 as opposition parties continue to reposition themselves.
Melaye’s football-inspired congratulatory message has since generated discussions among supporters, especially Arsenal fans who quickly connected the comparison with the club’s recent success.
