Senate President Godswill Akpabio has cautioned the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) against naming roads built with Federal Government funds, saying only the appropriate authorities have the power to do so.

He issued the warning on Wednesday while inaugurating newly completed roads in Abuja’s Gaduwa District during activities marking the third anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Akpabio endorsed the position of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who recently stated that area council chairmen have no authority to name projects funded by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

According to the Senate President, only projects executed with funds from area councils can be named by council authorities, while infrastructure financed by the Federal Government remains under the control of the appropriate government institutions.

He stressed that public projects should not be named after individuals without following due process, adding that those who wish to dedicate roads to family members or associates should do so only after personally funding such projects.

Akpabio also praised Wike for taking a firm stand on the issue, saying the directive would safeguard government projects from arbitrary decisions and ensure proper administrative procedures are followed.
