President Bola Tinubu has challenged the Senate to change the Constitution and allow the creation of State Police warning that Nigeria cannot defeat insecurity with the current structure.
Enitan gathered that the President delivered the strong message on Wednesday night during an interfaith meeting with senators at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Tinubu said terrorism banditry and insurgency have stretched the country’s security system. He insisted that giving states policing powers would improve intelligence gathering and enable faster response to crime.
He told lawmakers that Nigeria must take control of its forests and protect children from fear. The President urged the Senate to begin the constitutional amendment process without delay.
Beyond security Tinubu applauded the National Assembly for backing major economic reforms. He said the removal of fuel subsidy and tax adjustments helped block corruption and stabilise public finances.
The President maintained that signs of recovery are already visible and called for sustained cooperation between the executive and the legislature to secure long term prosperity.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio responded by commending Tinubu’s leadership. He said federal reforms have increased revenue for states and opened opportunities for infrastructure growth while offering prayers for national peace and stability.
