The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has criticised Governor Seyi Makinde over his remarks on President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, alleging he would have mismanaged Nigeria if he had become president instead of Tinubu.
The party made the claim while responding to the governor’s recent criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies and his comments ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Makinde, who spoke through a representative during the unveiling of the Allied People’s Movement, APM, candidates in Ogun State, had expressed confidence in his ability to defeat President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. He also criticised the Federal Government’s economic policies, prompting a sharp response from the Oyo APC.
In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, the APC described the comparison between Makinde and Tinubu as unrealistic, insisting that the two leaders differ significantly in experience, leadership capacity and governance.
The party argued that despite the initial hardship associated with President Tinubu’s economic reforms, the administration has earned recognition from reputable global institutions for implementing policies aimed at stabilising the economy and preventing a deeper national crisis.
According to the APC, no amount of criticism directed at the President would persuade Nigerians to support Makinde, whom it accused of failing to deliver the expected dividends of democracy to the people of Oyo State.
The party further alleged that the governor had transferred several state-owned assets to private interests during his administration, claiming such actions raise serious concerns about how he would have managed Nigeria’s resources if he had occupied the nation’s highest office.
It maintained that Nigerians made the right choice by electing President Tinubu, arguing that someone with Makinde’s record should not be entrusted with the leadership of the country.
The APC added that President Tinubu’s ongoing economic reforms would continue to reposition the country for long-term growth, expressing confidence that the administration’s policies would ultimately deliver the desired benefits despite criticisms from opposition figures.
