The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling APC of using the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai as a political strategy ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking during a television interview on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, maintained that the ADC supports lawful prosecution but questioned why El-Rufai remains in custody despite facing offences he described as bailable.

He alleged that the government fears El-Rufai’s release could strengthen the opposition and pose a greater political challenge to the APC before Nigerians return to the polls in 2027.

Abdullahi also raised concerns over the former governor’s wellbeing, saying the authorities should ensure his safety while the legal process continues.

He further criticised the Tinubu administration, alleging that it is more concerned with securing victory in the next election than solving the country’s economic and security problems.

The ADC spokesman described the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda as ineffective, insisting that Nigerians were yet to experience the promised improvements.

El-Rufai is currently being prosecuted over alleged financial misconduct linked to his tenure as Kaduna governor and is also facing a separate wiretapping case instituted by the Department of State Services.
