Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC)Atiku Abubakar has condemned the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in bandits’ captivity, saying it reflects deepening insecurity and weak state protection in Nigeria.
Atiku described the incident as a painful reflection of Nigeria’s worsening security situation.
In a statement released through his media office, he said the death of the former Defence Information director exposes the failure of government to protect even highly placed former security officers.
He lamented that a man who spent decades serving the country ended up dying in the hands of criminals, calling the situation deeply disturbing.
According to him, the tragedy is part of a broader pattern of insecurity affecting different parts of the country, where kidnappings and attacks have become frequent.
Atiku said the growing boldness of armed groups shows that Nigeria’s security response needs urgent restructuring and stronger coordination.
He also drew attention to simultaneous violent incidents reported in other parts of the country, saying the situation reflects a nationwide security breakdown.
The former vice president stressed that continued attacks on citizens, schools, and communities show that the nation is losing ground in its fight against insecurity.
He called for urgent reforms and stronger political will to confront banditry and terrorism more effectively.
Atiku extended condolences to the family of the late military officer and urged authorities to prioritise the protection of all Nigerians.
He insisted that decisive action, not routine statements, is needed to restore confidence in the country’s security system.
