President Bola Tinubu has expressed sorrow following a deadly attack in Benesheikh, Borno State, where troops and insurgents were killed after terrorists targeted a military formation in a coordinated overnight operation.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed that the attack was carried out against the 29 Task Force Brigade, with insurgents attempting to overrun the base around midnight.
Although the military admitted that personnel were lost, it did not officially verify claims that Brigade Commander Brigadier General Oseni Braimah was among those killed.
Contrary to this, Kaga Local Government Chairman, Zanna Ajimi, told reporters that the commander was indeed one of the casualties recorded in the incident.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers arrived with sophisticated weapons, destroying military assets and burning shops located near the base.
A local resident, Musa Aji, noted that while no civilian deaths had been confirmed, reports indicated that several soldiers were killed during the clash.
According to the military, troops under Operation Hadin Kai responded effectively, engaging the insurgents and forcing them to withdraw after intense fighting.
The Defence Headquarters described the assault as a sign of desperation by weakened insurgent groups facing sustained military pressure.
It added that follow-up operations were ongoing to track down fleeing fighters and prevent further attacks.
Reacting to the development, President Tinubu praised the fallen soldiers for their bravery and sacrifice in defending the country.
In a statement by his Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, the President assured that the government would continue to support the armed forces.
He urged military personnel not to be discouraged, emphasising the need for continued dedication and patriotism.
Tinubu also called on Nigerians to stand behind the military and refrain from actions that could demoralise troops.
He extended sympathies to the families of the victims and the people of Borno State, pledging sustained efforts to achieve lasting peace.
