President Bola Tinubu has removed Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun from office and immediately appointed Tunji Disu as his successor, setting off a major shake-up in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

Sources within the Presidency said Tinubu directed Egbetokun to resign during a private meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The decision brings an abrupt end to Egbetokun’s tenure despite earlier expectations that he would remain in office until 2027 following amendments to the Police Act.

Egbetokun, who became the 22nd Inspector General of Police in June 2023, initially faced retirement upon reaching the mandatory age limit. However, a legislative amendment allowed him to complete a four-year term regardless of age, a move that generated public and political debate at the time.

His time in office attracted criticism over the handling of protests and security operations in parts of the country, with rights groups raising concerns about alleged excesses by security personnel.

With Disu’s appointment, attention now shifts to how the new police chief will navigate mounting security challenges and restore public confidence in the force. Preparations are reportedly underway for a formal handover at Force Headquarters in Abuja, while an official statement from the Presidency is expected.
