Students sitting for the National Examinations Council (NECO) examination at Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, came under attack after suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists stormed the school.
Witnesses said the attackers arrived at about 9 a.m. and fired several gunshots into the air, creating panic before seizing an unknown number of students and taking them into the bush.
The incident also claimed the life of a teacher, while another teacher suffered injuries during the invasion.
Confirming the attack, Borno State Police Command spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nahum Daso, disclosed that authorities have yet to determine the exact number of abducted students, adding that several remain unaccounted for.
He also said the command could not immediately verify reports of additional deaths linked to the attack.
Daso explained that the police, the military, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and other security personnel have intensified search operations across nearby forests to locate the missing students and arrest those responsible.
The rescue operation is ongoing as security agencies continue efforts to bring the abducted students home safely.
