President Bola Tinubu has reassured families of pupils kidnapped in Oyo and Borno states that the Federal Government will continue rescue efforts until every abducted child returns home safely.
Tinubu made the promise in a statement released to mark this year’s Children’s Day celebration, which coincided with the Eid el Kabir festivities across the country. He acknowledged the emotional pain facing parents whose children were recently taken by suspected terrorists.
The president spoke against the backdrop of attacks on schools in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, and Mussa village in Borno State, where several pupils and teachers were abducted during separate invasions by armed men earlier this month.
According to security reports, attackers stormed Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Community Grammar School, and LA Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, killing two persons and abducting scores of children alongside school staff.
On the same day, suspected insurgents reportedly attacked Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State and forcefully took away several students while classes were in session.
Addressing the affected families, Tinubu said the government would not abandon the victims or ignore the suffering of parents waiting for the safe return of their children. He urged families to remain hopeful despite the painful situation.
“To the children, their parents, and teachers, you are not forgotten,” the president said while promising that security agencies would sustain rescue operations until the victims regain freedom.
Tinubu disclosed that he had instructed security agencies to intensify intelligence based operations aimed at rescuing abducted children and other vulnerable Nigerians across affected communities.
The president also announced plans to strengthen security around schools located in high risk areas through improved collaboration involving local communities, security formations, and state governments.
He explained that the strategy would focus on stronger early warning systems, improved school security mapping, and quicker communication channels between schools and nearby security units.
Tinubu further promised that rescued victims would receive counselling, healthcare support, and rehabilitation assistance to help them recover from the trauma of abduction and violence.
He called on parents, community leaders, religious institutions, and teachers to work closely with security agencies to improve the protection of children and prevent attacks on schools nationwide.
According to the president, Nigeria’s fight against school abductions must focus on prevention, rapid response, and stronger cooperation between citizens and security agencies.
