President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima and Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele are set to join thousands of financial sector professionals and other stakeholders at the 19th Annual Banking and Finance Conference organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.
The conference will take place on September 8 and 9, 2026, at the Congress Hall, Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, with participants also able to join virtually from different parts of the world.
More than 10,000 delegates are expected at the gathering, including senior bankers, regulators, government officials, fintech executives and development partners. The CIBN described the event as the largest gathering of banking and financial professionals in Africa and said it would provide a platform for stakeholders to address emerging threats and opportunities within the financial services industry.
The CIBN President and Chairman of Council, Dr Dele Alabi, announced the participation of the high-profile dignitaries during a media briefing in Lagos. He said the conference theme, “Building a Resilient Economy in an Era of Disruptions: Strategic Imperatives for the Banking and Financial Services Industry,” was particularly relevant as financial institutions navigate technological changes, geopolitical uncertainty, cybersecurity risks, climate challenges and evolving consumer expectations.
Alabi said the theme was also consistent with the institute’s IMPACT vision, which places emphasis on Inclusion, Membership Economy, Professionalism, Accountability, Competencies and Technology. He said the conference would seek practical approaches to strengthening the resilience of the banking and financial services industry while contributing to broader economic development.
The Chairman of the Consultative Committee for the conference, Moruf Oseni, said the resolutions from the event would be compiled into a communiqué to support national economic policy formulation. Oseni, who is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank, was represented at the media briefing by the bank’s Executive Director, Segun Opeke.
According to Alabi, CIBN has continued to ensure that recommendations from its annual conferences are not abandoned after the events. He said experts prepare an executive summary of key recommendations and the institute subsequently monitors their implementation. He cited last year’s recommendation on improved coordination between monetary and fiscal policies as one of the major outcomes from the previous conference.
The institute said the upcoming gathering would also feature the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, while the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Mathew Verghis, is expected to deliver the keynote address. Their participation is expected to strengthen discussions around Nigeria’s economic and financial policy direction.
Key sessions at the two-day conference will focus on bank recapitalisation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and systemic risk. The programme will also include initiatives aimed at engaging female leaders and emerging fintech innovators, as industry stakeholders deliberate on strategies for building a financial system capable of withstanding future economic and technological disruptions.
