A Kaduna High Court has deferred its ruling on the bail application filed by former governor Nasir El-Rufai, directing that he remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission pending a decision expected in early June.
Trial judge Darius Khobo announced that the court would deliver its decision in the first week of June after reviewing submissions from both parties.
The former governor is currently facing an amended nine-count charge bordering on allegations of fraud, corruption and abuse of office.
During proceedings, prosecutors strongly opposed the bail request, arguing that granting it could interfere with ongoing investigations and potentially compromise key evidence.
Rather than issue an immediate decision, the court ordered that the defendant remain in custody until a formal ruling is delivered.
Defence counsel Ubong Akpan criticised the development, insisting that there was no sufficient legal basis to deny bail at this stage.
He further suggested that the decision may have been influenced by El-Rufai’s past position in public office, a claim the defence firmly rejects.
Akpan added that the legal team would pursue further remedies through the courts, while also describing the case as politically influenced and calling for calm among supporters.
