A fresh political controversy has erupted ahead of the 2027 elections, with the Nigeria Democratic Congress rejecting claims that its National Leader, Seriake Dickson, is secretly working with the APC against Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, declaring that the former Bayelsa governor remains loyal to the party.

The NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, described the allegations as malicious lies against Dickson and insisted there was no secret or open agreement between the former governor and the ruling All Progressives Congress.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, Director argued that Dickson’s political record offered no basis for claims that he would secretly work against his own party or its presidential ticket. He said the former governor remained committed to the NDC and its candidates.

Director insisted that Dickson was not a front for the APC or any other political interest, stressing that his decision to remain with the NDC demonstrated where his political loyalty lies. He said Dickson had chosen to help build the opposition party rather than defect to the ruling party.

According to the NDC spokesman, Dickson could have taken what he described as the easier political route by joining the APC, but instead elected to work with like-minded opposition figures seeking to challenge the ruling party and pursue what they consider a different political direction for Nigeria.

He also referenced Dickson’s more than seven years in the Senate, arguing that his consistent positions on national issues provided evidence of his political principles. Director said Dickson had repeatedly expressed positions he considered supportive of Nigerians affected by the country’s worsening difficulties.

The allegations emerge against the backdrop of growing political activity ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with opposition parties stepping up preparations to challenge the ruling APC. The NDC is presenting Obi and Kwankwaso as its presidential ticket for the election.

Director alleged that the claims against Dickson were being pushed by unnamed political opponents who, according to him, were unsettled by the growing popularity and spread of the NDC across Nigeria.

He urged supporters to disregard the allegations and remain committed to the party’s political objectives.

The NDC spokesperson called on members, supporters and well-wishers to remain focused on securing victory for Obi, Kwankwaso and other candidates contesting under the party’s platform. He maintained that attempts to associate Dickson with any deal against the NDC ticket were completely unfounded.
