The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee has temporarily suspended renowned lawyer Mike Ozekhome from the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN.

The committee announced the decision after its 173rd general meeting, stating that the suspension would remain in force while disciplinary proceedings against the legal practitioner continue.

In a statement signed by Supreme Court Chief Registrar Kabir Akanbi, the LPPC said the measure was taken under provisions of its regulations governing the SAN rank.

The committee noted that the suspension is intended to protect the credibility and prestige of the country’s highest legal distinction pending the resolution of the issues under review.

It further directed Ozekhome not to parade himself or hold himself out as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria until a final decision is reached.

The development comes as Ozekhome faces trial alongside Ponfa Useni in a case involving allegations surrounding the use of a fake Nigerian passport during a property dispute in the United Kingdom.

The disputed property is located in London and has been the subject of competing ownership claims before a UK tribunal.

Both Ozekhome and his co-defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges and remain on bail as the legal proceedings continue.
