Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is heading to the next phase of his legal battle as he prepares a no case submission following the closure of the prosecution’s case by the Department of State Services.

The DSS had filed amended charges accusing him of unlawful interception of communications and actions said to violate national security laws under the Cybercrimes legislation.

The allegations are linked to comments made during a television interview where he claimed access to a private phone conversation involving a senior security figure.

During Tuesday’s court session, the DSS announced it would not present further witnesses, bringing its case to an end.

El-Rufai’s defence team responded by stating that the evidence presented was insufficient to sustain the charges and requested permission to formally ask the court to dismiss the case.

The prosecution opposed parts of the defence request, while both sides agreed on timelines for filing and responding to applications.

The court also ruled against a request to relax El-Rufai’s bail conditions, maintaining the requirements earlier set for his release.

The matter was adjourned to September for hearing on the no case submission and further proceedings.
