Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is expected back in court today as the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna resumes hearing in the corruption and abuse of office charges filed against him.

The former governor is currently standing trial in a case instituted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over allegations linked to his time in office.

The trial has continued to generate reactions within political circles and among residents, forcing security agencies to maintain a strong presence around the court environment during proceedings.

Justice Rilwanu Aikawa had earlier granted the former governor bail on April 14 after considering submissions from lawyers representing both parties in the matter.

According to the ruling, El-Rufai must provide two sureties and meet a bail condition fixed at N200 million. The judge also ruled that he should remain in ICPC custody until every condition attached to the bail is satisfied.

The court instructed the sureties to surrender their international passports. It also stated that one surety must be a senior civil servant on at least Grade Level 15, while the second must be a recognised traditional ruler.

In another directive, the court warned the former governor against making public statements concerning the ongoing case and ordered him to appear in court whenever required.

During Wednesday’s session, El-Rufai was present in court, though it was not immediately clear if he had completed the bail process. Reporters were prevented from gaining access to the courtroom, while his lawyer, Ubong Akpan, refused to comment after the hearing ended. Proceedings are expected to continue today.
