Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, has defended President Bola Tinubu against criticism over insecurity, arguing that Nigerians should remember that former President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired Army general, also failed to eliminate the problem completely.
Yari spoke during a visit to Kebbi State, where he met Governor Nasir Idris, traditional rulers and other APC leaders in Birnin Kebbi as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.
While acknowledging the country’s security difficulties, Yari said the Tinubu administration was making efforts to address them. He argued that the president should not be judged without considering that Buhari had also been unable to completely overcome insecurity despite his military experience.
“If a retired general did his best but could not completely tackle insecurity, what do you expect of President Tinubu, who is not a general?” he said, adding that Tinubu had done his utmost to confront the challenges.
Yari also urged Nigerians to reflect on their relationship with God, stressing that the fight against insecurity required collective responsibility in addition to government intervention.
Turning to the 2027 elections, the APC campaign chief praised Governor Idris and other party leaders for bringing traditional rulers together and mobilising support for Tinubu. He said the campaign council would cooperate with individuals and groups willing to contribute to the president’s re-election, regardless of their positions.
Yari expressed confidence in the APC’s chances in Kebbi, pointing to the support he witnessed during the visit. He also defended the administration’s economic response, saying hardship was not unique to Nigeria and claiming that inflation and fertiliser prices had declined.
He added that the Federal Government was implementing measures, including cash transfers to vulnerable households, to reduce the pressure on citizens. Governor Idris, in turn, said Kebbi had benefited from federal projects under Tinubu and declared that the state remained supportive of the president and the APC ahead of the 2027 polls.
