FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi has urged residents not to allow police officers to search their phones during roadside operations, saying the practice violates the directive of the Inspector-General of Police.

Sanusi said the Inspector-General of Police has banned indiscriminate phone searches because they have been abused by some officers for extortion and harassment.

He explained that phones should only be examined during investigations after a suspect has been lawfully arrested and taken to a police station.

The police commissioner urged residents to reject any roadside demand to inspect their phones and report such incidents through the police emergency lines or the relevant police command.

He warned that officers who violate the Inspector-General’s directive would face disciplinary measures.

Sanusi reaffirmed the FCT Police Command’s commitment to protecting citizens’ rights while ensuring officers operate within the law.
