The wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El Rufai, Hajiya Asia El Rufai, has appealed directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, asking him to ensure her husband receives justice and humane treatment while facing trial.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday alongside El Rufai’s other wife, Aichatou, Asia said the family had remained traumatised by the former governor’s continued detention and the restrictions placed on him.
She reminded the President that both she and her husband actively supported his 2023 presidential campaign and appealed to him to ensure constitutional rights are respected throughout the legal process.
Asia clarified that the family was not asking Tinubu to stop the prosecution but only wanted El Rufai to receive fair treatment, proper medical attention and bail on reasonable conditions.
She alleged that the former governor, who is reportedly managing high blood pressure and high blood sugar, has been denied consistent access to his doctors, relatives and legal team.
According to her, the situation has placed the family under constant emotional pressure, saying they live each day fearing they could receive tragic news.
She also questioned the reported restriction placed on El Rufai’s personal doctor, Professor Bello Abubakar, asking who authorised the decision to deny him access.
Asia maintained that keeping the former governor in custody under such conditions makes it difficult for him to prepare his defence and urged authorities to allow the judicial process to proceed fairly.
Her comments came shortly after the ICPC announced the arrest of Professor Abubakar over alleged false statements linked to El Rufai’s medical visit.
The anti graft agency also maintained that El Rufai violated the conditions of his court approved medical visit and failed to appear before the Kaduna State High Court for his scheduled trial after insisting on seeing his personal physician.
