President Bola Tinubu has questioned Peter Obi’s record as Anambra governor, accusing him of avoiding the state’s erosion crisis while claiming he successfully confronted the Atlantic Ocean during his time in Lagos.

The President made the remarks on Friday at an APC campaign rally in Akwa Ibom State, where he addressed party supporters and compared Obi’s record in Anambra with his own experience as governor of Lagos State.

Without mentioning Obi directly, Tinubu referred to a presidential aspirant who had joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress and accused him of failing to confront erosion in Anambra. He questioned why such a politician would seek to lead the country after allegedly failing to address a major challenge in his state.

Tinubu contrasted the situation with his record in Lagos, claiming that he confronted and tamed the Atlantic Ocean. He also commended Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno for addressing erosion challenges in his state, describing him as a stable leader working for residents.

The President did not limit his criticism to Obi, as he also questioned the political conduct of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who is seeking the presidency on the platform of the African Democratic Congress.

Tinubu criticised Atiku’s departure from the Peoples Democratic Party, recalling his rise within the party and subsequent decision to leave following disagreements. He argued that abandoning a political organisation because of what he described as a little inconvenience raised questions about the former vice-president’s leadership character.

He also described opposition parties as lacking the leadership and calibre of politicians found in the APC. According to him, the ruling party has a stronger collection of political figures capable of maintaining unity and providing dependable leadership.

Tinubu specifically mentioned former APC National Chairman Umar Ganduje and other party leaders while praising their contributions to the party’s structure. He described them as dependable, reliable and honest individuals who had helped build a united APC.

The President’s comments come as political parties and their candidates prepare for the 2027 elections. Obi, who finished third in the 2023 presidential election, has moved from the Labour Party to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, while Atiku is pursuing his ambition under the ADC.
