Governor Monday Okpebholo has publicly tied his political future to the 2027 presidential election, declaring that he will resign from office if President Bola Tinubu fails to secure victory at the polls.
Okpebholo made the bold pledge during a Friday interview on African Independent Television (AIT), where he expressed unwavering confidence in Tinubu’s re-election prospects.
Framing his statement around the president’s overall national victory, the governor linked his optimism to ongoing infrastructure and development initiatives, which he attributed to federal backing under Tinubu’s administration. He argued that tangible projects — not rhetoric — would ultimately shape voter behaviour in 2027.
“Edo people have not even thanked Tinubu. How they will thank him is through their votes,” Okpebholo said.
“The various projects across the state are the things that will speak for Tinubu and he will win here. Bet me, if he doesn’t win, I will resign as governor,” he added.
Although he highlighted developments within Edo State and voiced confidence about Tinubu’s support “here,” the governor did not explicitly limit his resignation vow to the president’s performance in Edo alone, leaving his declaration broadly tied to the general election outcome.
Okpebholo also downplayed suggestions of mounting political tension ahead of 2027. Presenting himself as a grassroots mobiliser, he insisted his approach to politics is anchored in community engagement rather than intimidation.
“There’s no election here for him. I’m a politician who under-studied Chief Aneni. My style of politics is not thuggery but grassroots,” he said.
His remarks come amid intensifying political alignments and strategic positioning across party lines as stakeholders prepare for what is shaping up to be a high-stakes 2027 general election.
