The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have intensified efforts to curb election fraud ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
During a sensitisation workshop held in Abuja, ICPC Chairman Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, represented by Henry Emore, said the initiative reflects both agencies’ determination to safeguard the credibility of future elections.
Aliyu stressed that protecting the integrity of elections requires collective action, adding that corruption during the electoral process undermines democracy, increases public spending and weakens citizens’ confidence in government institutions.
He noted that electoral offences also create additional work for security agencies and anti corruption institutions through numerous investigations, petitions and legal disputes.
Representing INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan, National Commissioner May Agbamuche Mbu said the electoral body remains committed to promoting national values through credible elections and transparent electoral processes.
She explained that the training programme would enhance the capacity of electoral officers, encourage the adoption of best practices and provide practical strategies for handling future elections.
Officials from both agencies expressed confidence that the collaboration would strengthen electoral integrity, reduce corruption and contribute to peaceful, credible and widely accepted elections in 2027.
