The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by an additional two weeks to allow more eligible Nigerians to enrol before upcoming elections.
The electoral body said the exercise, previously expected to end on July 10, will now close on July 24, 2026, following consultations with stakeholders and an assessment of the registration process nationwide.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, who said the decision was influenced by feedback from state offices, political parties and civil society organisations.
INEC also unveiled a new online self service registration platform for first time voters, describing it as another step towards improving convenience and expanding access to voter registration.
According to the commission, the service will become available from July 8 through its official voter registration portal, enabling eligible Nigerians to complete the process online.
Haruna said the digital platform is equipped with identity verification, biometric screening and other security features to safeguard the credibility of the national voter register.
The commission encouraged all qualified citizens who have not registered to use the extended period and embrace the new online registration system, promising to continue improving electoral services through technology.
