The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that voters will now be verified using their National Identification Number (NIN) during registration, a move aimed at preventing multiple registrations and strengthening the credibility of future elections in Nigeria.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan said the initiative is aimed at eliminating duplicate voter registrations and improving the integrity of the nation’s voter register.
He said the commission has already incorporated NIN verification into its online Continuous Voter Registration platform, where applicants are required to provide their identification number.
According to him, the partnership with the National Identity Management Commission will strengthen data verification and ensure that only eligible citizens are captured in the voter register.
NIMC Director-General Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote said the commission is ready to support INEC in building a secure identity verification system for credible elections.
