Amid rising insurgent attacks, the Senate on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to suspend political activities in eight high risk states, warning that the growing insecurity threatens lives, military operations and national stability.
The call came after a motion presented by Abdul Ningi, who described the security situation as alarming and warned that the nation must act decisively to prevent further escalation.
According to lawmakers, states most affected include Borno State, Plateau State, Bauchi State, Benue State, Niger State, Sokoto State, Kebbi State, as well as parts of Kano State, where attacks have continued to disrupt daily life.
Senators warned that repeated assaults on communities and military bases have weakened confidence in existing security strategies, stressing that urgent intervention is needed to restore stability.
Recent attacks by Boko Haram fighters have further intensified fears, especially following threats against rescue efforts involving kidnapped victims held in remote areas.
The Senate also pressed for immediate action to secure the release of hundreds of abducted civilians, many of whom are women and children, noting that their continued captivity raises humanitarian concerns.
Lawmakers urged military authorities to review operational strategies, improve equipment deployment, and ensure accountability in the conduct of troops during counter insurgency operations.
While commending the efforts of security personnel, the Senate encouraged citizens to cooperate with authorities by providing timely and reliable information that could aid ongoing operations.
