Aminu Masari, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-Katsina governor, has praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying his nearly four decades in Nigerian politics have not exposed him to a president with better plans for the country.

Masari made the statement while speaking to a group of women at a public event reportedly held in Kaduna, in a video shared on Facebook by HM Arewa, a media organisation that publishes news in Hausa.

The former governor said his political experience had given him enough perspective to make the assessment, insisting that he had never encountered a Nigerian president with plans he considered better than Tinubu’s.

“Even if I were asked to swear, on my age and my political involvement for almost 40 years, I can confidently say I have never seen a president with better plans to make Nigeria great than Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

Masari also took issue with people who argue that Tinubu has achieved nothing since assuming office, saying criticism of this nature has been directed at previous administrations.

He recalled that former President Olusegun Obasanjo faced accusations of sectionalism and tribalism after his first four years in office.

According to Masari, similar reactions followed the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, and he believes the same pattern is now playing out against Tinubu.

“The people who claim that Bola Ahmed Tinubu has done nothing are the kind of people who never appreciate when someone is doing well,” Masari said.

He also raised concerns about the use of religion in political and social arguments, questioning attempts to associate particular religions exclusively with certain ethnic groups.

He asked whether religion could legitimately be regarded as belonging exclusively to the Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo, while urging Nigerians to reject rhetoric capable of creating divisions.

With the 2027 election approaching, Masari called on women preachers to use their platforms to discourage divisive messages and encourage their families and communities to promote unity.

“Each and every one of you knows how to talk to her husband or children better than anyone else can,” he said.

Masari described the divisive rhetoric he criticised as the work of people he characterised as “deeply selfish”.

The former lawmaker was Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007, during the second term of former President Obasanjo.

He subsequently served as Katsina governor from 2015 to 2023 and was appointed in August as Deputy Director-General, Parliamentary Mobilisation, of the APC Presidential Campaign Council for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign.

His remarks come amid increasing political activity and competing campaigns ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
