The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Friday ruled that the Nigeria Police Force must pay Omoyele Sowore ₦30 million in damages for falsely declaring him “wanted” in October 2025.
Justice Musa Kaakaki condemned the actions of CP Moshood Jimoh of the Lagos State Police Command, describing the “wanted” declaration as illegal and a violation of Sowore’s fundamental rights.
Sowore hailed the verdict as a victory against police overreach and persistent abuse of authority.
“While IGP Kayode Egbetokun scrambled to secure ex parte orders to hide police misconduct, Justice Kaakaki struck a firm blow against their tyranny,” Sowore said on his social media accounts.
The court made it clear that Moshood Jimoh acted outside the law and that such abuses by public officials carry consequences.
“This ruling proves that impunity has limits,” Sowore added, applauding his lawyer, Barrister Tope Temokun, for his unwavering defense.
The unlawful “wanted” notice had sparked outrage across civil society and human rights groups, who criticized it as politically motivated and a misuse of police power.
Friday’s judgment marks a major legal triumph for Sowore, who has repeatedly clashed with security agencies over his activism and criticisms of government officials.
