Senator Orji Uzor Kalu says he would resign from the APC if President Bola Tinubu disrespects the opposition or the Catholic Church, while defending the President against calls for an apology over his meeting with Catholic bishops.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the senator dismissed claims that the President insulted Catholic bishops during their recent meeting at the Presidential Villa.
According to Kalu, Tinubu enjoys a cordial relationship with the Catholic Church and should not be portrayed as an enemy of the bishops because of differing opinions expressed after the meeting.
He added that while the President has nothing to apologise for in the current controversy, he should accept responsibility whenever his administration makes a genuine mistake.
Kalu also argued that Cardinal John Onaiyekan’s post-meeting comments should not automatically be regarded as the official position of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, saying individual clerics may hold personal views.
The senator noted that the conference’s official position was presented through its communiqué, adding that the engagement between the bishops and the President was conducted openly.
The controversy followed Cardinal Onaiyekan’s comments on economic hardship, corruption and the 2027 elections, which have generated differing reactions from political leaders across the country.
