The family of Nnamdi Kanu has expressed fresh concern over his health, alleging previous medical neglect and urging authorities to grant him unrestricted access to independent doctors while protecting members of his medical team.
In a statement released by Emmanuel Kanu on behalf of the Okwu-Kanu family, the family alleged that Kanu’s medical condition worsened while he was receiving treatment from state-appointed doctors.
It claimed that he experienced severe potassium deficiency, hypertension, kidney-related complications and heart issues before an independent team of physicians was permitted to attend to him.
According to the family, Kanu’s health improved after the intervention of an independent medical team led by Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, with noticeable improvement in his potassium level and reduction in several health complications.
The family also alleged that some members of the medical team are facing intimidation and disciplinary scrutiny, calling on the relevant authorities to allow them to continue providing medical care without interference.
It appealed for unrestricted access for Kanu to his preferred doctors and requested an independent review of matters relating to his medical records and treatment.
The family further disclosed that petitions had been submitted to foreign governments, Nigerian authorities and international human rights organisations over the issue.
Meanwhile, Kanu has also petitioned the Nigerian Medical Association, seeking its intervention to protect his independent medical team and ensure his continued access to healthcare in accordance with Nigerian law and international standards for the treatment of prisoners.
