Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas has called for a fast and carefully coordinated rescue operation following the abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State as military Tucano jets intensify surveillance operations.
The latest development comes amid heightened military activity in the state, with videos circulating online showing Tucano fighter jets stationed at the Ibadan airport as security agencies intensified efforts to track down the abductors.
The armed attackers reportedly stormed Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School and LEA Primary School in Esiele, where they abducted several victims during the coordinated assault.
Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed that seven students were taken from Community Grammar School while 18 children and seven teachers were kidnapped from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School. He also confirmed that one person lost his life during the attack.
In a statement released through his media aide, Musa Krishi, Abbas strongly condemned the abduction and called on security operatives to combine speed with professionalism to ensure the safe return of the victims. He also insisted that those behind the attack must be arrested and prosecuted.
The Speaker praised the swift response of Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu, who reportedly visited the area and deployed additional personnel to support rescue operations.
Abbas lamented the growing attacks on educational institutions across the country, warning that such incidents could worsen Nigeria’s already troubling out of school children situation. He maintained that schools should never become centres of fear and violence.
At the same time, the Oyo State Government cautioned residents against spreading unverified security reports capable of creating panic within communities or affecting rescue efforts. Authorities dismissed rumours alleging fresh attacks around Ogbomoso and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology as false.
Speaking on behalf of the government, Abayomi Fagbenro urged residents to provide only verified information to security agencies and remain alert as authorities continue operations to rescue the abducted victims.
