Defence Minister Christopher Musa has welcomed the newly approved salary increase for military personnel saying the decision will improve welfare, raise morale and strengthen the Armed Forces’ capacity to combat insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges nationwide.

In a statement released on Wednesday through his media aide, Leah Katung-Babatunde, Musa described the salary review as a landmark intervention for military personnel serving across the country.

He said the graduated pay increase shows the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting officers and soldiers who continue to risk their lives in the defence of Nigeria.

According to the minister, the increase in personnel expenditure from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion is evidence that the administration is matching its promises with concrete action aimed at improving the welfare of troops.

Musa expressed optimism that the improved salaries would ease financial pressure on military personnel and encourage greater commitment in ongoing operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and other forms of criminality.

He pledged that the Armed Forces would respond to the government’s gesture with renewed dedication, professionalism and stronger efforts to safeguard the country’s peace and security.

The Defence Minister also encouraged officers and soldiers to regard the salary increase as an opportunity to redouble their commitment to protecting Nigeria and its citizens.

He added that the ministry would continue to support reforms aimed at modernising military equipment, strengthening technological capacity and improving the welfare of personnel and their families.

The new salary structure, announced by President Tinubu, will take effect from September 1, 2026, with personnel across the Army, Navy and Air Force expected to benefit from increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent.
