The Nigeria Democratic Congress has (NDC) defended its 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, after Labour Party chieftain Abayomi Arabambi filed three separate lawsuits seeking access to his academic and National Youth Service Corps records.

The suits were filed against WAEC, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the NYSC at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Arabambi is asking the court to compel the institutions to release official documents relating to certificates and academic records associated with Obi.

The development has triggered a response from the NDC, which described Obi’s academic pedigree as verifiable and challenged Arabambi to produce evidence if he believed there was anything questionable about the candidate’s credentials.

NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said Arabambi had reportedly acknowledged that he was not challenging the genuineness of Obi’s certificate, questioning why he was still seeking access to the records.

Director, however, acknowledged that Arabambi had the constitutional right to approach the courts and said the party would not attempt to prevent him from pursuing the matter.

The WAEC case is numbered FHC/ABJ/CS/2064/2026, while the NYSC case is FHC/ABJ/CS/2063/2026. Both were filed on September 1, 2026.

The action against UNN, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2144/2026, was filed on September 9.

According to the court documents, Arabambi’s WAEC case seeks a Certified True Copy of WAEC Certificate No. SC042560, reportedly issued to Obi Gregory Onwubuasi in June 1978.

At UNN, he is seeking access to the institution’s certificate register, academic and graduation records, Senate or degree-award records and other official documents connected to Certificate No. D000198.

His NYSC case concerns Certificate No. 203495, reportedly issued to “Obi, Gregory Peter-Onwubuasi (Mr)” on May 1, 1986.

Arabambi is also asking for information regarding the appearance of the name “Peter-Onwubuasi” in the relevant NYSC records.

The documents further showed that WAEC rejected his request in an August 11, 2026 letter, citing provisions of the Freedom of Information Act.

Arabambi alleged that UNN and NYSC failed to grant his requests or explain why they had refused to release the requested information.

But the NDC maintained that Obi had nothing to hide, pointing to his previous challenge for his credentials to be independently verified.

Director also criticised what he described as excessive attention to the credentials controversy, arguing that greater focus should be placed on Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.

No date had been fixed for the hearing of the three suits as of the time of the report, leaving the courts to determine the outcome of Arabambi’s demands.
