The senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, has called on the Federal Government to urgently improve the capacity of the Nigerian military to tackle insurgency and banditry across the country.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Ndume revealed that he recently visited communities in Borno State affected by fresh attacks, alongside Governor Babagana Zulum. The visit followed deadly assaults by insurgents in Ngoshe and Pulka areas.

According to him, fighters linked to Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province carried out coordinated attacks on Ngoshe in Gwoza Local Government Area, killing soldiers, the village head, and several residents.

He added that the attackers also abducted women and children during the raid before troops eventually regained control of the affected communities.

Ndume expressed concern that soldiers were initially overpowered due to the superior weapons used by the insurgents. He said the military only reclaimed the area after reinforcements arrived.

The lawmaker stressed the need for the government to provide advanced weapons and sufficient ammunition to security forces, noting that inadequate equipment puts troops at risk during operations.

He described the destruction in the affected communities as overwhelming, saying most structures were completely destroyed.

Ndume also praised Governor Zulum for visiting the affected areas and internally displaced persons camps, while urging the Federal Government to support ongoing rebuilding efforts and provide relief for displaced residents.
