Senate President Godswill Akpabio says stronger cooperation among government, researchers, investors and farmers is necessary for Nigeria to overcome food insecurity and build a modern agricultural economy.
Speaking at the National Legislative Summit and Expo on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions in Ibadan, Akpabio said the country’s food challenges can only be solved through collective efforts involving both public and private stakeholders.
The Senate President, represented by Deputy Senate Majority Leader Isa Ashiru, said agriculture must evolve beyond traditional farming methods and embrace technology driven solutions.
He explained that the future of farming would depend heavily on research, biotechnology, mechanisation, irrigation science and climate adaptation strategies.
Akpabio noted that young Nigerians should begin to see agriculture as a profitable industry capable of creating wealth and employment opportunities rather than as a last resort for survival.
He added that Nigeria must focus on agro processing and exports instead of remaining dependent on raw agricultural production.
The Senate President further pledged legislative support for programmes and policies designed to strengthen rural development, food production and agricultural innovation across the country.
