Nigeria has strongly condemned a recent Houthi attack on civilian targets in Saudi Arabia’s Najran Region, where several civilians, including women and children, were reportedly injured.
The Federal Government expressed its position in a statement released on Friday, August 7, 2026, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, as tensions involving Houthi forces in Yemen and Saudi Arabia continue to raise concern.
The Ministry said Nigeria was deeply concerned about the renewed hostilities and the impact of such confrontations on civilians. It stressed that people who are not taking part in armed conflict must not become targets of violence.
According to the Nigerian government, the attack in the Najran Region injured several civilians, among them women and children. It described the incident as a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the principles established to safeguard civilian populations during conflicts.
The Federal Government maintained that attacks against civilians and critical infrastructure are unacceptable irrespective of the group or party responsible. It urged the international community to speak firmly against actions that expose innocent people to danger.
Nigeria called on all sides involved in the conflict to show maximum restraint and comply with international law. The government said the safety and protection of civilians must be placed at the centre of efforts to manage and resolve the crisis.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also advocated stronger diplomatic efforts to secure a peaceful and lasting settlement to the conflict. According to the government, such diplomatic initiatives must respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of every state in the region.
Nigeria said it would continue monitoring developments in the area and working alongside regional and international partners to encourage peace, security and stability in the Gulf and the wider Middle East.
The Federal Government’s position reinforces its call for a diplomatic approach to regional conflicts, particularly where continued hostilities threaten civilian lives and undermine stability across the region.
