Nigeria has entered into a defence partnership with Türkiye that will lead to the establishment of a military training facility designed to improve the effectiveness of its armed forces.

The agreement followed high level discussions held during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum 2026, where both countries explored ways to strengthen military cooperation.

Officials say the facility will act as a central hub for training and capacity building. A temporary site will begin operations soon, while plans are underway to develop a permanent structure in a coastal area.

As part of the arrangement, Nigerian personnel will undergo specialised training in key areas including counterterrorism, intelligence gathering, Special Forces tactics, and modern warfare techniques.

The programme will also include joint exercises and overseas training opportunities, with some personnel expected to travel to Türkiye for advanced instruction.

The partnership extends beyond training, covering technology transfer and collaboration in defence production, including surveillance systems and unmanned aerial platforms.

Both countries also agreed to strengthen intelligence sharing and improve coordination in tackling security threats such as insurgency and organised crime.

Additional areas of cooperation include support for reintegration programmes for former fighters, as well as improved border management strategies.

While the agreement has been welcomed as a positive step, experts have emphasised the need to complement military upgrades with improved welfare and support for personnel on the frontlines.
