President Bola Tinubu has announced that Nigerians should begin to experience lower transportation costs from October 1, as the Federal Government and state governments intensify efforts under the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday outlining the progress of the government’s CNG transportation initiative.

The President said the plan followed an August 27 meeting with governors of the 36 states, where they agreed to pursue measures capable of delivering visible reductions in transport fares.

Tinubu said the target is for more Nigerians to notice measurable changes in transportation costs beginning from October 1.

“From October 1, more Nigerians should begin to see measurable reductions in transportation costs,” he said.

To drive the programme, an implementation committee was established under the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme through the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq chairs the committee, which is working with state governments, PI-CNG and electric vehicle stakeholders and other critical partners.

The President said the stakeholders were already working to identify transport routes requiring priority attention and determine the appropriate measures needed to make transportation more affordable.

He said the government’s preparations have gained greater urgency because of the ongoing global energy crisis and its impact on transportation and energy costs.

The programme is designed to expand access to compressed natural gas as an alternative energy source for transportation, with the government seeking to use the initiative to reduce the financial burden on commuters.

Tinubu said the work being carried out by the committee and other stakeholders would support the implementation of the programme across key transport corridors.

The President’s announcement comes as transportation costs remain a major concern for Nigerians, with the government seeking to use CNG-powered transport initiatives to provide cheaper mobility options from October.
