Nigeria’s police boss, Tunji Disu, has sent a clear message to newly elevated officers, warning them to avoid misconduct and uphold the highest standards of professionalism.
Speaking at a ceremony in Abuja where senior officers received their new ranks, Disu reminded them that promotion brings increased responsibility and closer scrutiny, not personal reward.
He urged the officers to lead with integrity and discipline, emphasizing that their actions must align with the law and the expectations of the public. He warned that corruption, abuse of authority, and negligence will not be tolerated under his leadership.
Disu placed strong responsibility on the officers to monitor and control the conduct of their teams, noting that poor supervision often leads to unethical behaviour. He said commanders will be held accountable for both their results and the actions of officers under them.
The IGP also called for a policing approach that prioritizes citizens, respect for human rights, and responsiveness to community needs. He added that reforms within the Force are focused on improving transparency, efficiency, and public confidence.
As part of efforts to strengthen leadership capacity, Disu revealed plans for a strategic retreat for top-ranking officers. The programme, organised with support from the United Nations Development Programme, will address modern policing techniques and leadership skills.
