Senator Victor Umeh has expressed confidence that Rabi’u Kwankwaso cannot be defeated in Kano State during the 2027 election, provided the poll is conducted transparently and meets acceptable standards of credibility.
Umeh made the statement while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, where he spoke about the NDC’s level of preparation for the forthcoming general elections.
The Anambra Central senator said political opponents might continue making claims about Kano, but maintained that Kwankwaso’s political influence in the state would give him a significant advantage in a free and fair election.
He said he had been working closely with Kwankwaso and other leaders of the party and was convinced that the party was preparing adequately for the 2027 contest.
According to him, the party is building a strong opposition platform capable of presenting credible candidates and challenging its political rivals across the country.
Umeh also cited recent political activities in Rivers State as an indication of what he believes could be wider public support for the party ahead of the election.
He pointed to the reception received by the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Port Harcourt, where he said large numbers of supporters turned out to accompany the former Anambra State governor.
The senator also highlighted the first major outing of the party’s Rivers State governorship candidate, Dumo Lulu-Briggs, claiming that the gathering attracted such a large crowd that Port Harcourt was effectively shut down.
Umeh argued that the people participating in such political activities were not simply spectators but members of the electorate who would ultimately have the opportunity to vote in the 2027 election.
He questioned what could be driving the level of enthusiasm around the opposition candidates if the gatherings did not reflect genuine political interest among voters.
The senator’s comments come at a time when political parties are intensifying their campaigns, alliances and grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kano remains particularly important to the presidential contest because of its large voting population and longstanding influence in northern Nigerian politics.
While Umeh was confident of Kwankwaso’s strength in Kano, his prediction remains dependent on the conduct of the election, as he specifically tied his claim to the poll being credible, transparent, free and fair.
