Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called for strong economic retaliation against South Africa, urging the Federal Government to revoke MTN and DSTV licences after fresh xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians abroad.
While speaking in the Senate, Oshiomhole demanded the revocation of licences belonging to MTN and MultiChoice, operators of DSTV, insisting Nigeria must no longer respond passively to repeated violence against its citizens.
He argued that Nigeria should adopt a strong reciprocal stance, saying economic pressure remains a powerful tool in international diplomacy.
Oshiomhole maintained that sympathy and diplomatic statements have not stopped the recurring xenophobic incidents, stressing the need for direct action.
He further suggested that MTN should face nationalisation or expulsion, accusing the company of taking large profits out of Nigeria while Nigerians suffer abuse abroad.
The senator extended his criticism to DSTV, describing the service as part of foreign companies benefiting heavily from Nigeria’s economy.
Other senators echoed concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa and called for urgent intervention from regional and continental bodies, including the African Union.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio condemned the attacks and assured lawmakers that diplomatic engagement with South African authorities would follow.
