The Allied People’s Movement has seized on the APC’s defeat in Osun to predict a major setback for President Bola Tinubu in 2027, arguing that the result could be a warning ahead of a presidential contest against Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde.

The party said Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory over APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji showed that voters could reject a powerful political establishment when dissatisfied with its performance, describing the outcome as significant for the wider 2027 political battle.

APM National Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Abubakar, made the position known in a statement on Sunday, arguing that the Osun result exposed what the party described as declining support for the APC and increasing demand for a change of leadership at the federal level.

According to the party, the significance of the result is heightened by Osun’s political connection to President Tinubu. It argued that the APC’s defeat in the state demonstrated that no political establishment should assume it is unbeatable when voters are dissatisfied.

The APM also referenced alleged booing of APC leaders and political associates of Tinubu during the election period, claiming the incident reflected growing public frustration with the ruling party. It warned that such sentiment could affect the APC’s reception during the 2027 campaign.

The party attributed the alleged dissatisfaction to issues including economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, inflation and what it described as poor governance under the Tinubu administration. It argued that these issues could become major factors in the 2027 presidential election.

While criticising the APC, the APM promoted Makinde as its preferred alternative, describing the Oyo governor as competent, transparent and people-oriented. The party said Nigerians were increasingly gravitating towards him because of what it described as his record of performance and practical approach to governance.

The party also pointed to Makinde’s administration in Oyo State and the visit by Sierra Leone President Julius Bio as evidence of the governor’s growing profile. It said the engagement showed that Makinde’s leadership and development policies were attracting attention beyond Oyo State.

Makinde, who has governed Oyo since 2019, is expected to complete his second term in 2027 and will fly the APM’s presidential ticket, according to the party. The APM said it intended to challenge the APC and lead what it described as an effort to change the country’s political direction.

The party also warned the APC against attempting to rig the 2027 presidential election, insisting that any move to subvert the will of voters would be resisted. It said the Osun outcome had strengthened its determination to confront the ruling party in the next general election.
