Following fresh abductions in Borno and Oyo states, the Senate has pledged to speed up constitutional efforts aimed at establishing state police to curb rising insecurity across Nigeria.

Lawmakers described the incidents as alarming and said they reflect the growing threat insecurity poses to education and community safety across the country.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele said the upper chamber is working to fast track the creation of state police as part of ongoing constitutional amendment processes in the National Assembly.

He noted that the proposed reform is designed to complement existing federal security agencies and improve response to local security challenges.

Bamidele explained that once the constitutional review is completed, the proposal will be sent to state legislatures for approval in line with constitutional requirements.

He called on state assemblies to support the initiative, stressing that security reforms should be treated as a national priority beyond political considerations.

The Senate also urged full implementation of the Safe School Initiative to protect students while broader reforms are being finalized.

He further described the repeated school abductions as a tragic development that threatens national progress and demanded urgent legislative intervention.
