The Nigeria Labour Congress says the Department of State Services (DSS) endangered democratic values by the way it arrested Omoyele Sowore, insisting that security agencies must defend the Nigerian state rather than political interests.
NLC President Joe Ajaero faulted the conduct of the security operatives, saying the dramatic arrest and intimidation witnessed at the court did not reflect the professionalism expected from the nation’s secret service.
He argued that the DSS should not be seen acting as both the complainant and the agency detaining the accused, maintaining that criminal prosecutions should remain the responsibility of the Ministry of Justice.
Ajaero further stated that the constitutional duty of the DSS is to protect the Nigerian state and not to project loyalty to any individual or administration.
He warned that institutions weaken democracy whenever they prioritise pleasing those in power instead of defending constitutional principles and due process.
Drawing lessons from the United States Watergate scandal, the labour leader said strong institutions were responsible for ensuring accountability, even at the highest levels of government.
He called on the DSS to remain faithful to its constitutional mandate and uphold justice, fairness and the rule of law in carrying out its responsibilities.
