The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has advanced plans to introduce state police, with a detailed framework set to be submitted to the National Assembly for legislative approval.

NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, revealed this after leading 25 governors to meet President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos. The gathering included senior officials such as Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila.

According to AbdulRazaq, governors have been engaging security agencies and the Office of the National Security Adviser to develop a workable legal structure that will support the creation of state police across the federation.

He said the proposal is part of a broader strategy to strengthen security at the sub-national level and improve response to threats facing communities nationwide.

The NGF chairman reaffirmed the commitment of governors to intensify collaboration with security forces in order to combat terrorism and stabilise the country. He added that sustained partnership remains key to improving safety and protecting lives.

Speaking on the President’s recent visit to the United Kingdom, AbdulRazaq described the trip as a bold diplomatic move that could open new economic opportunities for Nigeria. He expressed optimism that agreements reached during the visit would translate into tangible benefits for citizens.

He also commended the administration’s policy direction, noting that ongoing reforms aim to promote inclusion and strengthen governance outcomes.

The visit, held during the Ramadan and Lenten season, provided an avenue for governors to show solidarity with the President and express confidence in his leadership. AbdulRazaq said the strong presence of governors demonstrated unity and shared commitment to national progress.

He concluded by stressing that collective action and cooperation among leaders will be critical in addressing insecurity and driving sustainable development across Nigeria.
